Language Arts – Writing

Upon learning the basic rules of grammatical usage, mechanics and sentence structure, participants will plan, compose and edit writings exhibiting proper use of capitalization, punctuation, spelling, verbs, nouns and pronouns, modifiers, phrases, clauses, and sentence structure. Business, instructional, and informational documents will be analyzed, evaluated, edited, and revised for organization, sentence structure, usage, and mechanics. Students will demonstrate effectiveness in the planning and composition of resumes, employment applications, job descriptions, interview questions and responses, and other business-related communications.

Social Studies

General Social Studies knowledge will be applied in analyzing data for information validity, decision making, and exploration of idea relationships. Visual processing skills and advanced reading comprehension will be used in the understanding, interpretation, analysis, evaluation and critique of a variety of graphical materials. Historical documents will be examined for intent, implications, and effects. Historical issues and accounts will be reviewed to compare and contrast points of view, distinguish fact from opinion, and identify differing interpretations. Students will research, understand, and evaluate data and documents concerning employer-employee relationships, barriers to successful goal completion, and community concerns toward an outcome of solution proposal.

Science Skills

Students will learn, through reading comprehension and visual processing skills, and apply general scientific knowledge and rules to a variety of situations. This information will be analyzed and used to explore relationships among ideas, to make sound scientific judgments, and predict possible outcomes. Through the understanding, interpretation, analysis, evaluation and critique of documents and graphical materials, participants will become able to assess and analyze community and workplace concerns regarding health and safety and the environment.

Language Arts – Reading

Using reading selections, participants will gain the skills which allow for identification of the main idea and supporting details, develop inferences and logical conclusions, and analyze materials to explore relationships of thought. Literature, art, non-fiction, business documents, and other materials will be used in increasing comprehensive and analytical skills. Students will examine information from sources which relate to other areas in the GED Preparation Program as well as readings from employment and personal realms.

Mathematics

The mathematics skills segment begins with the basic operations using whole and mixed numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and standard and metric measurements. The Algebraic principles relating to ration and proportion, signed numbers, basic equations, formulas, and word problems will be applied as well as Geometric principles and formulas relating to measurement. The slope of line, Pythagorean Theorem, and y-intercept formulas

will be learned in the Trigonometry section. Students will interpret data gained from graphical and mechanical sources. Measures of central tendency will be computed and analyzed and possible outcomes based on experimental or theoretical probabilities predicted. Problem solving procedures will be identified and estimation used to solve and assess reasonable outcomes. Students will exhibit skills in applying principles to work and personal situations by developing a budget, reconciling accounts, completing tax forms, and calculating and evaluating costs and benefits.
